In Year 1 we encourage children’s independent learning through a combination of adult led teaching activities and play based learning.

  • In the Autumn Term our Topic is Marvellous Me

    In literacy we write simple labels, lists, captions and sentences.  There is a continued focus on reading and writing simple sentences with the children using their phonic knowledge to decode and spell words.

    In maths we work hard on reading, writing and ordering numbers to 100.  We begin to learn our number bonds to 10 and use such knowledge to help us with addition and subtraction.  We learn to tell the time to the hour and half hour

    We identify, name, label, draw and label parts of the human body and say which part of the body is associated with each sense.

    Our topic work brings together art, music, computing and design technology.  The children draw self-portraits, make 3D sculptures of themselves using clay and design and make a shoe box room based on a room in their own home.

    The children will be involved in Dance, Gymnastics and Games in P.E. Full P.E. kits are needed in school on Tuesday and Wednesday. Reading books will be changed on Mondays, however, there is a basket in which your child can put their reading record book if they need it changing more frequently. Listening to your child read regularly is vitally important, as is signing their reading record to say that they have read their book.

    In the second half term we will be learning about The Great Fire of London.

  • During the Spring Term we have two main topics.  The first of which will be Pirates of Bolshaw followed by ‘Old and New Toys in the second half term.

    In Literacy the children read stories about toys and use such models to create their own short stories.  The children use their knowledge and understanding of how non-fiction texts are structured and worded to write simple information texts on the topic of toys.

    In maths the children work hard to develop their addition and subtraction skills using numbers to 20.  They continue to learn and rehearse number bonds to 10 so that they can recall these facts quickly.  The children learn to recognise coins and choose the correct coins to pay for toys in our class Toy Shop.

    Through our ‘Old and New Toys’ topic we investigate how toys work, how they move, materials that are used to make old and new toys and the children think of words to describe them.  The children have the opportunity to make toys in our Creative Area, selecting the most appropriate materials to use.

     

     

  • During this half term our topic will be ‘How Does Your Garden Grow?’ The children will name and label parts of a plant, name some plants in our local environment, investigate what plants need to grow well and keep a ’Broad Bean Diary.’ We will be looking at the work of Andy Warhol and recreating a piece of ’Pop Art’ using plants as a stimulus.

    We will be reading stories linked to our topic, such as Handa’s Surprise and Jack and the Beanstalk. The children will use ‘Talk for Writing’ to internalise these stories in order to retell them independently. They will then change elements of the story to make it their own. The children will also read a number of poems and use descriptive language to write poems of their own.

    In Numeracy the children will use their counting in 2’s,5’s and 10’s skills to solve problems. They will read and write number to 100 in numbers and words. We will focus on counting back in 1’s from any given number. The children will represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 20. We will continue to add and subtract one and two digit numbers to 20.

    During the last half term our topic will be ‘Down by the Sea.’ We will be reading a number of stories set at the seaside. We will read The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch and use drama to explore and write about scenarios and characters in the story. We will compare the setting in the story to Heald Green. We will label features of the seaside. The children will learn about sea creatures and write facts files about them . We will read ‘Class Three All at Sea’ and make treasure maps and write a message in a bottle.

    In Term 3 we will be learning about The Rainforest and all the different animals that live there as well as the lifecycle of plants.
