Welcome to Year 2!

  • Totally Roarsome!

During the Autumn term our topic is ‘Totally Roarsome!’ We learn all about dinosaurs and other creatures from millions of years ago.

We learn all about the different species of dinosaur, and their life cycle. We use clay and modroc to make models of our favourite dinosaurs and their eggs!

Harry and his Bucket full of Dinosaurs help us with our reading and writing and we make up our own “Harry” story.

We learn about research and and write factfiles about different dinosaurs. We even had to dig for fossils like the famous fossil hunter Mary Anning!

    Term 2

After the Christmas break we begin the topic ‘Towers, Tunnels and Turrets’!

We learn all about castles and the people that lived in them long ago. We look at how we could fortify the school against invaders and which job we would like to have if we lived in a castle.

This year our class assembly was all about castles – we put on an amazing show and even got an encore!

After the half term our topic is all about mini beasts. We learn about life cycles and watch caterpillars and tadpoles grow before we release them into their natural habitats.

We also study snails, observing their habitat and planning scientific experiments to find out their favourite food.

This year we were very lucky to have Andrew from Animals In Tuition visit and show us some of his incredible creatures. We learned a lot and had an incredible day.

  • Term 3

In the summer term we begin ‘Down in the Jungle’ – hoping that the weather will be as warm as it is in the jungle!

We begin by learning how to write jungle animal riddles and move on to find out all about Steve Irwin who raised awareness for conservation and respecting animals.

After the half term we move on to ‘Is there life on Mars?’ – A topic all about the wonder of space.

We look at the first journeys into space by Yuri Gagarin and Neil Armstrong as well as a focus on the Mars Rover and what it’s life on Mars is like and why it is there.

We also have a think about what life in space might be like, looking at the experiences of Chris Hadfield on the ISS and even make a space sandwich!

This year we have been lucky enough to have a potato-growing competition between Year 1 and Year 2 – we have been tending to ours very carefully and hope to get the most potatoes!

  • Information

The children will read in a guided reading group once a week. Please read at home with your child every evening for 10 minutes, asking questions about the text to help them to develop their understanding. Please sign their reading record to say that they have read their book and then it will be changed.

Homework will be given out on a Friday and must be returned by Wednesday. Spellings will be given out on a Friday and need to be learned ready for a test on the following Wednesday.

Please ensure that your child has a full P.E. kit in school at all times, with a set of warmer clothing, (joggers and a top) for colder days when we do outdoor games.—our P.E. days are Tuesday and Thursay. Children are not allowed to wear jewellery during P.E. and earings must be removed or covered with plasters or medical tape.

In the summer term children will need to bring in their P.E. kit on a Friday for tennis sessions.
