Year 6 is an exciting and challenging final year for our pupils, as they are now confident and competent learners who are able to listen, work hard and apply their knowledge.
To ensure that the children are prepared for their transition to High School, we encourage independence and that they are able to take responsibility for themselves and their own learning.
In term 1, our topic is “World War 2.”
In English, we investigate the features of formal letter writing as well as studying different genres of fiction. Our class story for this topic is ‘Adolphus Tips’ and ‘Friend or Foe’ both by Michael Morpurgo.
In Maths, we work hard to further develop our understanding of mathematical reasoning. We then apply these skills in real life situations.
In Science, we investigate electricity.
Our topic work brings exciting cross-curricular activities in English, Art, Music, Computing and Design Technology. In Art we learn different techniques including wax resist and shading.
In the Spring Term we focused on ”Wonder’, by R.J. Palacio. Reading comprehension is developed by looking at using evidence from the text to support answers.
In Maths we focus on Fractions, Decimals and Percentages, moving towards Ratio. The children consolidate their knowledge of prime factors, square and cube numbers as well as revisiting factors and multiples. Efficient and strategic methods are developed further.
In Science, we focus on forces.
In the Summer Term we have lots to look forward to! Following our SATs we will be going to Boreatton Park for our residential visit.
In addition, we will be working towards our End of Year Show and our Leaver’s Assembly. Our topic is Ancient Greece.
