Eco-Schools

News Flash – The Flag pole is up! Official flag raising will be on June 15th 2018

Green Flag Award update.

The flag has arrived!

Eco Schools assessor Stuart visited in November. He spent a couple of hours touring the school, checking all our project evidence and meeting with the children and staff. Following his visit he recommended  Bolshaw for the Green Flag award. It has been several years in the making and we are thankful to all the children and staff who have worked so hard. Now the challenge is to further develop and maintain our Eco School status.

A huge thank you! The Tree Station have provided us with a load of wood chippings and log seats for our outdoor area, through their community scheme. https://www.treestation.co.uk/

Newsflash – 13th March 2017

The Eco Warriors are planting up a new habitat hedge.

A new habitat hedge has been planted today on the field perimeter. Our free pack of thirty tree saplings came from the Woodland Trust. The children, from year 3 to year 6,worked with Mrs Russ, Mr Suggett (site manager) and Mr Gash (School gardener) to plant up the hedge. This project will help to increase biodiversity at Bolshaw, by providing shelter and food for birds, small mammals and butterflies in the future.

Who can be an Eco- Warrior?

All children in Years 3 – 6 who have an interest in environmental issues can apply to become part of the Bolshaw Eco-Warriors Club. This group is led by the children and focuses on improving our school carbon footprint and educating our whole school community about the increasing need to protect the world around us. In parallel we are working towards the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award and are guided by their projects and areas for development. As stepping stones to this goal we applied for and achieved the Bronze Award in February 2016 and the Silver Award in Summer 2016!

Our Eco-Warriors aim to highlight current environmental issues and spread the word to the whole school through assemblies, poster campaigns and our notice board. Our Eco-School committee meet regularly to discuss our action plan and projects to work on in school. Year 6 act as team leaders and work with the club members to arrange litter patrols, monitor healthy snacks and highlight ways we can all save electricity, water and waste by recycling. The Eco-School committee also promote learning about global issues, such as sustainability and biodiversity by circulating lesson ideas to all staff and asking questions in discussions. 2016/17 – these areas are now embedded in the whole school development plan and curriculum focus groups.

News and Achievements

September 2015 – Eco Schools Committee formed. Year 6 pupils , Miss Brown, Mrs Russ, Mr Suggett, Mr Gleaves and Mr Gash.

Our school logo is design by the children and turned into badges for club members – a very exciting moment. Thank you Miss Brown.

2015 – the Eco-Warriors worked hard to earn the Woodland Trust Bronze Green Tree Award. The whole school helped by recycling Christmas cards, and attending a special assembly delivered by Year 6. We now have our sights set on the Silver Award!

Another big success in 2015 was completing the bottle greenhouse. This was a whole school effort supported by Mr Suggett and the Eco-Warriors club members. In the spring 2016 we grew and planted vegetable and flower seeds in it to plant out in early summer. During the summer we harvested  great crops of tomatoes, runner beans, strawberries and raspberries. We have learned a lot and hope for even better results next year.

February 2016 – Eco-Schools Bronze Award

29th April 2016 –  A great day for Bolshaw Primary ! A team of volunteers from Hardrock Café led by Mr Greig worked really hard on our outdoor area as part of their Save the Planet month. The flower beds have been dug over, bee friendly plants planted, trees trimmed and cut back, the greenhouse growing bed made and much more! A big thank you to them too for supplying us with two rain water collecting butts, which once installed will allow us to collect and recycle rainwater for the children to water our veg patch and sensory garden. Thank you.

In June 2016 the whole school took part in our fourth school grounds day, incorporating the Save the Children Den Day awareness and fundraiser and a variety of outdoor learning projects, from planting seeds and cuttings to enhancing the school grounds through outdoor art projects.

July 2016 – Eco-Schools Silver Award

2017 – Green Flag Award application

The Eco Warrior committee and all the club members are working hard to achieve the top award this year. We hope to have our assessment in the summer term.
